Good evening boys and ghouls. Welcome to another scarily delicious recipe. I simply couldn’t pass up an opportunity to make some delicious Halloween themed bread. Feel free to add any flavorings or herbs to the dough but be careful or it might change the colors of the bread.

I hope you all enjoy my recipe for creepy swirl bread.

  • Combine the water, yeast and sugar in a small bowl.
  • Set aside for 5 mins or until mixture is foamy like in the picture below.
  • Place the flour and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until mixture just comes together.
  • Divide the dough into three sections. One should be larger than the others, this will be the black layer that covers the entire bread.
  • Add food coloring to each of the sections and knead until smooth and the dye has been well incorporated. The black coloring will be added to the largest piece of dough. This is because you need enough dough to cover the entire swirl so it looks plain and black outside.
  • Place each of the colors in a large bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Set aside in a warm place for 1 hour or until dough doubles in size.
  • Take each dough out of the bowl and knock the air out. Start with the black bread and roll the dough into a rectangle like shape. Brush the black dough with water.
  • Take the green dough out and repeat the same process. Place the rectangle on top of the black dough and smooth down. Again brush the dough with water.
  • Repeat the process above with the purple dough and place it in the center.
  • Grease a bread tin. Starting from one short end, roll up the dough. Place in the prepared pan. Cover loosely with plastic wrap. Place in a warm, draught-free place for 45 mins to an hour to rise.
  • Preheat your oven to 190°C.
  • Brush the dough with milk and sprinkle on the poppy seeds. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Cut into pieces and serve. Please enjoy.
